Pretty Dutch Packaging

{ Tuesday, December 27, 2011 }

Dutch cosmetics brand Dr van der Hoog recently decided to radically reposition their brand with some new packaging. Creative network nu:amsterdam created the identity for the product line, which has over 60 different items (and 60 different packages!) We love what they ended up with - it's young, fresh, and lovely. cosmetics packaging

DFM Wish List: The iVictrola for iPad

{ Friday, December 23, 2011 }

There's really only one item on the DFM wish list this year, and unfortunately it's been sold out for a while.  Designed by NY based furniture designer Matt Richmond, the iVictrola combines vintage beauty and new technology to create a limited-edition, extremely awesome way to play music from your iPad. The dock doesn't require plugging in or batteries - it's completely acoustic, and the music that flows through the horn is loud enough to fill an entire room. And as if it couldn't get any better, each piece is one of a kind, made from a unique vintage horn and a walnut wood base. No wonder it's sold out - who wouldn't want one? Oh, and we love the leather iPad case it's pictured with on the Design Within Reach website as well. Happy Holidays everyone!

Store of the Week: The Melrose Project

{ Thursday, December 22, 2011 }

This week's "site" is actually a boutique in Los Angeles that sells antiques and art from various dealers: The Melrose Project. The store, which opened just over a year ago, has received a lot of buzz in the relatively short time it's been open. With stories in magazines from Architectural Digest to Elle Decor, Angeleno magazine calls The Melrose Project " a breath of fresh air for antiques. (...) It's like seeing old pieces within a new context for a new generation." We agree - and we want absolutely everything. To visit their website, click here. To read more about The Melrose Project and see more pictures of the interior, click here to visit the Velvet & Linen blog.

Recently, we've become kind of obsessed with Bon Appetit. Everything always looks amazing, and there are good articles to read while perusing the tantalizing recipe options. With Christmas next week already (yikes!), we've been craving cookies. Here are our picks from the "Holiday Cookie-a-Day" slideshow from Bon Appetit. (Click here to see it for yourself!)

Website of the Week: SOUS STYLE

{ Thursday, December 15, 2011 }

We've found a new website to obsess over! Good because we're happy to see that more blogs are popping up that have a similar manifesto and aesthetic as us, but bad because that means we're probably going to waste a lot of time at work reading it. Our website of the week, SOUS STYLE (www.sousstyle.com), focuses on real women who believe in the "imperfect perfect". Created by Pippa Lord, the current photo director at ELLE magazine, the site is full of amazing photos (no surprise there) and great articles on all the things we love: food, decorating, hand crafting, and entertaining. Favorite sections include "Pippa's Diary" and "The How To". We love the clean, but colorful design and overall feel and navigation of the site, built by New York designer/developer Mick Harper. Click here to visit SOUS STYLE (but make sure you have a good chunk of time to spare - you're going to need it.)

Lady Gaga, Queen of Branding

{ Tuesday, December 13, 2011 }

Just when it seems that Lady Gaga could't possibly get any more famous, this year she's taken on a new role to make her devoted fans love and adore her even more than they already do: Santa Claus. From November 21st- January 2nd, Gaga has infiltrated Barneys New York on Madison Avenue in NYC to open up her "avant-garde interpretation of Santa's workshop", aptly named: Gaga's Workshop. Described by Gaga as "a 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' moment, all whimsical and fun with a sense of art and fashion," the workshop is open to all of Gaga's little monsters (apparently that's what Gaga fans call themeselves), but only a very lucky few were granted admittance to the VIP opening event with a Gaga "golden ticket" invitation. Design Packaging, Inc. was given just 8 weeks to conceptualize, design, and finalize a showstopping invitation worthy of both the Queen of pop AND luxury retailer Barneys. Holy mother monster. Major shout out to Creative Director Evelio Mattos and the design team for producing the final invitation below -somehow it simultaneously communicates sophistication and absolute drug-induced mania, with definite notes of Tim Burton's Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Great work team, we're impressed!

Below, some photos of the grand opening, other branding elements (like an entire fleet of Gaga themed NYC taxis!), and the interior of the workshop. To see more, visit www.gagasworkshop.com.

The Cutest Chalk By Numbers

{ Monday, December 12, 2011 }

It's a rainy Monday morning in Los Angeles, and we needed a little cuteness boost to get the day going. We found it at the Dirtsa Studio shop on Etsy, which has the cutest chalk by numbers art ever! The name Dirtsa is "Astrid" spelled backwards - the name of the shop owner's grandmother, who was also an artist. A Yale graduate, Becky worked as a Display Coordinator for our beloved Anthropologie for two years before leaving to "explore creativity on (her) own terms", and now resides in New Jersey where she makes all the cuteness you see on Etsy. We love that, yes we do. To visit the Dirtsa Studio shop, click here.

Website of the Week: Lawson Fenning Shop

{ Thursday, December 08, 2011 }

It seems like Thanksgiving was just yesterday, so we can hardly believe Christmas is just about two weeks away already! We're so not prepared... but now we've got gifts on the mind. Our website of the week, the Lawson-Fenning online shop (www.lawsonfenning.com/shop), is a great place to look for just about anyone who appreciates gifts for the home that are both beautiful and functional. (And who doesn't love that, right?). For those of you in the LA area, Lawson-Fenning's shop in Silver Lake is an absolute must visit. With an eclectic and always changing collection of books, baskets, art, pillows, candles, throws, and various odds & ends - pretty much everything in the store catches our eye. But if, like us, you're way too busy to actually take the time to go out and shop, or if you live too far away - no worries. Lawson-Fenning offers free shipping on orders of $100+ and after looking at what they have to offer, we know we can spend that easily. Spending only $100 would be showing major restraint, we think. After a preliminary browse, we're thinking linen dishtowels for mom, agate bookends for the sister, and an iron bottle opener for the brother-in-law. Merry Christmas everyone!

(Oh, and I almost forgot - yes, we designed the site. Not that we're biased or anything... but we love this place!)

South African Paradise

{ Monday, December 05, 2011 }

Looks like we've got a case of the Mondays... today we'll be dreaming we were on vacation at Babylonstoren, a Cape Dutch farm complete with vineyards and an enormous vegetable garden in Cape Winelands, South Africa. Swoon.

And to top it off, they've got a nice website. We love being greeted by chickens.
